Recently-cleared, open forests provide an important habitat to a variety of species in New Zealand’s production forests. Sunlight reaches the ground in these cleared areas, encouraging the growth of plants that attract small mammals, insects and amphibians. In turn, predatory birds and animals hunt in these open areas, creating a richly diverse ecosystem.
